Canine heartworm is a 23 to 30 cm long worm that resides inside the heart of the dog.  The female produces baby heartworms called microfilariae which spread out through all the blood vessels of the dog.  When mosquitoes feed on infected dogs, they suck in blood and the baby heartworms.  They molt three times inside the mosquito producing L3 (more…)

Rabies

Rabies is a viral disease which causes damage to the brain and nerves of dogs and other animals such as cats, mice, cattle, horses, bats, humans and other mammals.  The disease is very fatal once signs of infection appear in the victim unless vaccination is given within a 10 day observation period. This disease is caused by a virus called rhabdovirus from the Latin “rhabdos” meaning rod-shaped since the virus looks like a rod under the microscope. (more…)

Infectious Canine Hepatitis

This is a very contagious disease of dogs which affects the liver, stomach and other organs.  It is caused by a virus and dogs get it from the urine, feces or saliva of infected dogs.  Dogs come down with a fever, won’t eat, are thirsty, have swollen eyes, watery discharges from the eyes and nose, painful abdomen and are vomiting.  (more…)

Canine Distemper

Canine distemper is a highly contagious disease in dogs caused by a virus which is related to measles.  It is also commonly called “hardpad disease” because the skin of the footpads of the dogs becomes thick like a callous.  The skin of the tip of the nose also becomes thick and flaky.  (more…)
